WEEK 4 Part: 2 Websites I Frequent/Who I Commented On

I thought I'd have to dig to find websites I visit frequently, as I realized I'm not on the web too much! BUT, easier than I thought, here are two websites I visit often enough to discuss:

Amazon.com

I think it's fair to say Amazon is effective due to it's popularity. But that begs the question, how'd they get so popular! C2C selling is one way! When you have a bunch of unique things that wouldn't necessarily do well on their own, but come together under a platform it seems to work. The site itself has improved a lot through the years. Once too busy and overwhelming, it has really simplified it's look and navigation which I think has made it's success even better.  Good design points are having a more simple layout of all the options, and an easily findable search bar and well known logo clear and easy to see. I come back repeatedly because I have Amazon Prime! But of course in part to Amazon making my experience easy and fast.  I'm not sure there is much to be improved on! If anything perhaps even more simplifying of images.

101 Things To Do San Diego

I go here a lot because it's my job! I am actually in charge of updating the site every week. It's a bit daunting but challenging to critique it.  I do not get to choose the layout, colors or even all images in my defense ha ha! I only update our clients.  I do like our layout. I think it's simple. I think it's easy to navigate. I think it's effective for that very reason. You can search what your looking To Do very easily by the categories.  The logo is consistent and clear. I come back again and again because I have too. Ha ha, but seriously...before I started working here I used to visit the site to find things to do with my kids in San Diego.  It used to be very cluttered. Now it's easy, I like the Calendar and Coupons page options and also that I can "flip" through the online magazine right on the home page. I also like that the social media buttons are right at the top. I think it's good etiquette that there isn't a pop up window asking people to sign up. The option to do so is clearly seen if visitors choose to do so. I think it could be improved upon with better images in some of the options. I have found being on the opposite end, that getting approved images can be a pain when dealing with a third party client! What they think is a good picture isn't always easy to use. We are a mobile responsive site, so I really like that as well!

  1. Hi Jennifer, Thanks for posting your site here! I did not know it existed and I think i will come back often. For me I'd love it if the right side column had a different color... even a slightly gray shade. It was at times hard to distinguish from the main column.
