WEEK 4 Part 1: Website Analyzing

Website Analyzing

Two websites with potential problems:
Arngren.net
Find three potential problems.
1. There is way too much going on visually!
2.Too many different colors and different size fonts.
3. It is still designed with Christmas theme and it's not Christmas.

 Riversideartcenter.org
Find three potential problems.
1. Their logo is very tiny.
2. The images in the header and first article change simultaneously making it difficult to follow.
3. Social media buttons are at the bottom of page.

Less images, and having images be more simple to look at. They are both overrun with too much visual going on. They are more complex to navigate due to too much information and/or too many images.

Logo's were small and seasonally outdated. Tells me they don't check anything often and they aren't aware of what's happening on their website. The fonts and colors were so mismatched, or trying to be too fancy that it took away from the intention. To showcase what they had to offer. Social media buttons were non existent for one site, and too big on the other. Riverside Art Center had an annoying pop up to sign up for newsletter. I wouldn't stay on either one of these sites for more than a moment. They were boring to look at, or so overstimulating that it was confusing.

The two businesses I chose to analyze for what was done right are:
https://www.nps.gov/
What have they done right?
1. Website is simple to look at. I can find what I need faster.
2. Nice images related to what I'm expecting to see here.
3. Not too much information,  I did not have to scroll forever to find anything.
4. Social media links clear to see
5. Mobile friendly.
It impacted me by sparking my desire to go outdoors! Great short articles on topics to help me plan a trip somewhere new, as well as helpful.

What have they done right?
1. I quickly find what I expect to see at the top of the page.
2. Images are very simple on a white background.
3. I like the rotating images and option to scroll through.
4. Articles below on what's happening give me options to explore more information, without being too loud, too busy or too much. Also very uniform in appearance.
5. Very short scroll to bottom of page.
6. Social media logos very clearly shown.
7. Mobile friendly.

I was impacted by the simplicity of the sites, along with the many options I could choose from.  Especially the simple colors, and letting the uniform images bring the color. That is something I like. I think anyone can make a very colorful and fun/interactive site with background, but what about content and image content for each article? It displays to me if they have  given thought into my user experience.
I appreciated that the two websites I chose for what they'd done right, had also considered smartphone use when looking at their site.

Comments

  1. Hi Jennifer!

I agree with you on the argren website. Personally, I thought it was possibly the worst website I have ever visited. I had to click off of it when I was blogging about it because I was getting a headache from it. Way too much!

I did however, like the riverside arts site. I thought it was a lot of information but it seemed pleasant to look at with earth tones background, and I personally liked the sliders they had going. To me they seemed easy to navigate. I did notice it had a responsive design.

Definitely hands down I agree with you on the nps site. Quick and easy to navigate and with a lot of information organized appropriately.

  2. Jennifer,

I agree with you on the websites. There are easy and simple ones to navigate. As well, there are busy and confusing websites. I am glad to have been able to review these websites and see the negative and positives of a website. Your conclusion was excellent!

  3. Yes to your view about riversideartcenter.org. Especially, the social media links. I analyzed the same site and didn't even notice them. Not a good choice if you are trying to gain fans or participants.

  4. Hi Jennifer, I think you had some great observations, especially about the a Riverside Arts Center. It is obviously a WordPress template, so I wonder about how much flexibility they have. Even so making the text bigger on the logo is a huge point. Like Kay, I thought it was a nice site, that is until I read your review. Again, great observations.
